It’s difficult to put into words exactly what I love about Palm Springs. It’s a town with a lot going on, and yet strangely quiet. It contains some of the finest examples of mid century modern architecture in the whole of America, situated in between bland corporate buildings and imitation Spanish villas. Almost every street holds a former home of a Hollywood star, and the shops hold a myriad of wonders for a 60s addict like me. Every time we take an empty suitcase, and every time we bring home three more.
This was our third visit, and by far our favourite. We stayed a whole week, and it felt like a year. Our crash pad deserves its own post, so for now I will say it’s the best hotel experience I’ve ever had. We drove around town exploring the modernist neighbourhoods, we drank cocktails until the sun came up, we lazed by the pool in 100 degree heat and enjoyed every minute. On the last day we took a tram ride up into the mountains, where it’s 30 degrees cooler than the desert floor. It’s a surreal experience leaving 100 degree heat to be greeted by snow-tipped mountain tops. That’s the magic of this amazing town.
Now it holds an extra special place in our hearts, because it’s where we found out we’re expecting our first baby.
